Alvi´s Dixie Stompers (ADS) was established in November 1996. Having played Dixieland music in Mäntsälä as early as 1956, two brothers, Alvian ”Alvi” and Jyrki Leppälä, decided to start a new Dixieland orchestra forty years later, in order to play Happy Jazz from the 20s and 30s.
By then Alvi had already played Dixieland in Lions Blend and Veho All Stars (Mercedes All Stars) for about twenty years. The latter boasted an excellent repertoire of Dixie songs as well as a fine swinging rythm section, in addition to one of the most advanced leading trumpet players in Finland, Nils ”Nisse” Nordström.
Alvi´s Dixie Stompers has always aimed to play the oldest form of jazz, the so-called ”Classic Jazz”, i.e. the New Orleans Style of Jazz and white people’s Chicago Jazz, commonly called ”Dixieland”.
The idols of the band are e.g. Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, King Oliver, Sidney Bechet and George Lewis, only to name a few of the greatest musicians among all the fine old-time jazz players.
