Alvian (Alvi) Leppälä

The bandleader  started playing the violin at the age of 7 but switched to the piano at 14, but the baritone saxophone and clarinet claimed him four years later. Today, he also plays the soprano saxophone (from 1927) and the C melody saxophone (from 1923). Alvi and Jyrki came up with the idea of forming their own Dixie band during the 50th anniversary of their own school in Mäntsälä, where they played at the ball, calling themselves "Alvis´s Dixie Stompers".

Jyrki Leppälä

Began as a violinist, like his brother, but switched to the trombone in his early teens. He used to practise in a dark potato cellar under ground, thus quickly getting a fine tone out of his lovely instrument. Since then, he has played in many big bands, both symphonic and popular ones. He sounds almost like Trummy Young.

Pricken1113.jpg

Cajus (Pricken) Lindroth

He plays the cornet,  and is a very good old-time imitator, a Kid Thomas sound-alike. His excellent half-staccato spreads a genuine old-time feeling, closely resembling New Orleans Jazz. Having joined ADS from the start, Pricken also plays Dixieland in Lions Blend, The Rolle Lindström Band and The VSOP Jazz Band.

Sven-Erik (Svenne) Krogius

The drummer has been playing the "jugs" from an early age. Having played in school bands and joining jam sessions in e.g. The Old House Jazz Club (the first jazz club in Finland), he became one of the corner-stones in ADS from the start. His rhythm is sweet and easy, driving the whole orchestra like a steam engine. His fillers and stepping effects are brilliant. In his solos you can even hear the melody of the song. He might be mistaken for Barrett Deems.

Robi2.jpg

Piano: Robert de Godzinsky

Robi (Robert) got a devastating jazz kick hearing Louis Armstrong's Mac the Knife, on a newly released 78 rpm record the year 1956 (at the age of six) and after that moment all the "child songs" records were destroyed.

Robi is, more or less, an autodidact in music and plays three instruments:

Piano, acoustic bass and sousaphone.

Robi has played in several combos playing traditional dance music, lately only traditional jazz, starting with Martin Brushane big band in the early 70s.

Robi is a recording engineer and teaches in the Sibelius Academy.
